Around a week or two before filming was due to begin a script reading was hosted and attended by myself, our Producer, Editor and D.O.P along with leads Zed and James. Jennie and Daniel were unable to attend due to work commitments.
We went through the script, Zoe's line being recited by our Producer and Perry's lines and scene description spoken by me. The aim of this reading was to familiarise the actors with one another and to understand the pacing of the scenes and the film in general, allowing questions to be asked in regards to specific points of the script and the plot overall.
This reading went very well and it was refreshing to actually hear the script out loud rather than just read it and imagine how it might sound. The scenes flowed very well, transitioning from one to the other without the continuity jarring or just sounding plain odd which was another relief. The other main reason was for myself and my main crew to meet the actors so that come first day of production, meetings aren't awkward and uncomfortable, getting to know and be around the actors at this stage means we can get into the shooting easier.
Looking online for script readings prior to conducting ours I couldn't find any for the films similar to Grit or ones that helped inspire it but I did discover a lot for TV shows and other films:
The format in which these were conducted are specific to a large audience attending a convention, but even so I took from this a method in which to carry out the exercise and overall the experience was a great learning curve for interacting with my actors outside of a set.
