Documentary Unit: Research - Dreams of A Life Screening
We watched the 2011 documentary film 'Dreams of A Life' directed by Carol Morely which is based on the real-life story of Joyce Vincent: who died in her North London home in 2003 and wasn't discovered for 3 years. It looks into her life via interviews with her friends and lovers and explores why she died so suddenly and randomly and, to an extent, how it took so long to find her.
Below is a scan of my notes on the film I made during the screening.
My thoughts on the film:
It was surprisingly upbeat based on it's context but it seems to be more a celebration of Joyce rather than a 'who dunnit?' style film. There were several moments in the film where we'd see sticky-notes on a timeline as if it was someone piecing it all together, this could either be a recreation style sequence to transition into the next 'chapter' of the story or it could be that the director didn't know what to have as a transition and decided to actually show the noted they made to piece the film together.

Documentary Unit: Research - 'The Client'
To find out what our client would be looking for I went on this page.
It features Sam Bickley: the Head of Documentaries for Features and Documentaries on BBC Three as she discusses what sort of shows they are looking for.
Of the types of documentaries they aren't looking for are shows that are set in the working environment, for example, Junior Paramedics and Invasion of The Job Snatchers (both of which are BBC3 productions). She says BBC feel they have "tried a lot in that area."
Another type of documentary they aren't after is property-related shows"getting pitched a lot of ideas around the area of property"
I sort of think a lot of our audience aren't owning property

Documentary Unit: Ideas Lab
We did an ideas lab and below are the ideas for what we could do as our documentary:
1. Sophie Hawkins - Sophie Hawkins's friend, Ellis Powell, died of an epilepsy-related attack and so has subsequently raised lots of money for SUDEP; a charity that focuses on providing support and sponsoring research on trying to prevent future deaths.
2. Real - Life Superheroes - Researching the social phenomenon of real-life vigilantes that deal with anything from helping an elderly person cross the road to preventing crimes.
We have agreed on doing option number 2 as it's quite a unique story, also it will appeal more to BBC3's audience.

Documentary Unit: Initial thoughts on project
For our documentary unit project we have to conceive, develop, script, shoot and edit a 10 minute documentary which fits one of the following briefs:
1. BBC3 - 'My Hero' - Stories of heroism.
2. Canterbury Cathedral - film for their YouTube channel about the artists and artisans work to keep the beauty of the cathedral alive.
My thoughts are with the BBC3 project as this allows more scope and variation on what can do, also the term 'Hero' can mean a lot of things such as:
- Bravery
- Protecting
- Inspirational
- Saving
- Admirable/Icon
